(The banner carrier, crucifer, and chalice bearer need to be in the sacristy approximately 10 minutes before the service begins.)

Chalice Bearer instructions:

o        Get the Gospel from the altar as soon as the singing begins for the Gospel hymn.

o        Hold it high during the procession, and then lower it so the priest can read it.

o        After the reading has ended, hold it high as it is processed back to the altar.

o        Place it flat on the altar.

Additional responsibilities:  serve as crucifer if one is not there

Crucifer instructions:

NOTES:  Participate in the service.  There should be a Book of Common Prayer and a hymnal on the pew for you to use so you can follow along with the service.  When the congregation is kneeling, you kneel or stand.  When the congregation is receiving communion, you should be seated (make sure to keep your feet out of the way so the priest and chalice bearers can get past you).  During communion, be especially conscious of the need to be still and quiet (this is an especially sacred time for the people receiving).

Banner Carrier instructions:

NOTES:  Participate in the service.  There should be a Book of Common Prayer and a hymnal on the pew for you to use so you can follow along with the service.  When the congregation is kneeling, you kneel or stand.  When the congregation is receiving communion, you should be seated (make sure to keep your feet out of the way so the priest and chalice bearers can get past you).  During communion, be especially conscious of the need to be still and quiet (this is an especially sacred time for the people receiving).

Order of Procession:

Oblationers’ instructions

NOTES:  You are responsible for the day's hospitality.  The church provides the coffee, but you provide any food and additional beverages.

Counters’ instructions

Collect the money from the collection plates (usually 2) to the right of the alter.

Collect the money from the drawer in the sacristy (from the 8:00 am service).

The supplies, (stamps, pledge sheet and deposit slips) are located in the top left-hand drawer of the desk.

It is best to count the loose plate offering first and set it aside.

When filling out the pledge sheet (found in the manila folder in the drawer), post the amount of the contribution next to the individuals name. If it is cash, mark “cash” next to the amount. If the individuals name is not on the pledge sheet, list the individuals name, amount and address on the back of the pledge sheet. If the contribution is made by check and has the address on it, you can make a copy of the                        check and attach it to the Pledge Sheet.

If the contribution has a designation (i.e. a special fund or memorial), do not record the amount next to the person’s name on the front side of the sheet.  Write the giver’s name, the designation, and the amount in the section designated for it on the back of the sheet. It is important to save any notes, cards and envelopes with the address of the donor so acknowledgements can be sent to the donors. Sometimes it is necessary to make a copy of check if it contains the address.

Stamp the back of each check with one of the deposit stamps.

o    For checks over $200, use the one that says the following:

“This Is A Receipt For Contributions For

Which The Organization Has Provided

No Goods Or Services To The Donor”

For Deposit Only Church of the Good Shepherd

o    For checks under $200, use the one that says the following:

For Deposit Only Church of the Good Shepherd

Any cash contributions that have no name associated with them go to the PLATE total on the back of the Pledge Sheet.

When listing the checks on the deposit slip, put the last name of the Individual and first initial who wrote the check in the space to the left of the amount of the check.

Total up the categories in the bottom left of the back side of the pledge sheet.  This total must agree with the total on the deposit slip.

     Sign and date the sheet.

Put both copies of the deposit slip, monies and checks in a Good Shepherd envelope in the deposit bag. DO NOT PUT PLEDGE SHEET IN DEPOSIT BAG. PUT PLEDGE SHEET SEPARATELY IN THE TOP DRAWER OF THE FILE CABINET SO THAT POSTING OF PLEDGES CAN BE DONE ON MONDAY MORNING.
